Taste of Rio Contributing Artist
Ruby Yallouz - Special Objects For Open Hearts

Of Egyptian origin born in Rio de Janeiro, Ruby studied at the French Lycée and discovered the wonders of the History of Art.

At the tender age of 14 she meets an artist jeweller and informs her parents that this will be her profession one day - but they had other plans for her! She enrolled at the university to study Architecture but signed up for a Jewellery/Goldsmith course on the side at the same time.

After a few years working as a qualified architect she decided to follow her initial passion, that of jewellery making.

However, the odds were against her and with the financial state of Brazil changing after President Collor become the first Brazilian president directly elected by the People after the end of the military government. Many people lost their purchasing power and so did Ruby. With a mortgage to pay, a baby on the way she joins her husband in the foundry, producing 20,000 pieces daily: buckles, buttons etc. This experience however provided her with an understanding of the Universe of Metal.  She falls in love with it and decides to create bigger, freer ‘nothing trapped to the body works of art.

Sculpting gave her the freedom to achieve all this! She developed her own working methods and accumulated so much knowledge with her artistic creations that she has designed a course that will start shortly teaching others her passionate secrets.

She enjoys playing with colours, humour and exploring the ‘Carioca’ sense in graceful curves with indigenous and folklore references - everything related to the Rio de Janeiro she breathes and loves. She uses suede, wood and is always on the lookout for interesting pieces of demolition wood to be worked into her creations and metal.

Brass in particular bathed in nickel or copper or gilded or oxidized. For her brass is the easiest of metals to work with and it comes in various shapes and forms (you can choose thickness, sheet, thread etc. and the offcuts are recyclable)

When someone buys one of my pieces I would like to think that my work becomes part of their lives, that it lives in their home and melts into the overall energy of the place.’ says Ruby. Fire is her favourite element as this ‘transformer’ all of her work.  ‘Without fire nothing is built and where fire has destroyed there can be renewal.’ She believes.
